Define your online presence

Once you have reason to believe that your business may benefit from an online presence, the next step is to define exactly what type website would best serve your needs. Three types of websites used by a majority of businesses today are informational, e-commerce, and lead-generation.

Information site. An information site, also called a brochure site, provides visitors with information. The site may cover information about a company, a product or a service. This is the simplest and most inexpensive site to develop.

E-commerce site. The purpose of an e-commerce site is to sell merchandise, allowing site visitors to make purchases online. The objective of an e-commerce site is to increase sales, while decreasing marketing expenditures. E-commerce sites can be database driven or secure page based.

Lead-generation site. The purpose of a lead-generation site, simply put, is to generate sales leads. Site visitors can provide, request and download information. This site may have components of the information and e-commerce models.

There are still other types, but the key component of any site is information. Provide solid information to site visitors and watch the success of your site soar.
